Qualifications And Experience: Should have unlimited Chief Engineer license, minimum 8 years of total sea time, and a minimum 1 year experience on respective vessel types.

Reporting To The Position: -
The Chief Engineer has the total responsibility for the engine department, motivate and follow up fellow workers.
Administration
* Is keeping the overtime lists for the engine department, and is responsible for that the list is handed to the master.
* Verify that engine room log, oil record book and other logs are kept according to laws, regulations and the Company’s instructions and to counter sign every day
* The chief engineer is responsible for the preparation and updating of the necessary files regarding the engine department. The filing system shall be in accordance with the standard set fourth by the Company.
* Prepare handover report for next shift and send a copy to the Technical Superintendent.
Operation
Supervision
* Have the daily supervision of the running of all machinery and technical equipment, including engines, propulsion and power supplies.
* Ensuring all new technical department officers and crew are familiar with relevant procedures.
Operational modes
Select the correct operational modes for each machinery component. With special regard to fuel economy and lifetime costs for the different components.
Watch duty
Perform watch duty if required.
Bunkering procedure
* Is responsible that safety measures are taken during bunkering and internal/external transfer of oil products. Chief Engineer is also responsible that bunker checklist is done prior to bunker operations.
* Fuel ordering
* Prepare bunkering requisitions, in co-operation with the master and client/charterer according to procedure set fourth in the charter party.
Other Operational Responsibilities
- Investigating non-conformances/conformities and applying corrective and preventive actions as agreed with the Master.
- Notifying the Master immediately of any defects which may affect ship safety or put at risk the marine environment
- Regular inspections of all plants and equipments.
- Assigning engineer officer or crew specific roles with respect to the engineering department’s responsibilities under the SMS.
- Ensuring statutory and class surveys are carried out on all plant and equipment covered by such survey requirements.
- Chief Engineer is responsible for following procedures and guidelines for use and storage of chemicals, as described in company Safety Management System.
Maintenance
* Efficient operation and maintenance of all plant and equipment associated with safety and anti-pollution as defined by statutory legislation and Company procedures.
* Maintaining stand by plant and systems in a completed state of readiness to meet emergency requirements.
* Provide job list for ambulant electrician on vessels where this is needed.
* Responsible for the maintenance in the engine department and technical and mechanical maintenance all over the vessel.
* Responsible for planned maintenance system
* Verify that the ships computerized planned maintenance system is used and updated
Continuous Machinery System
* Verify that the components in the engine department are classed according to the CMS regulations of the classification society.
* On deck maintenance
In close co-operation with the Chief Officer plan and initiate technical, mechanical and electrical maintenance on deck components such as Lifeboats, MOB and Work boats, winches, davits and cranes.
Charter’s equipment
* Plan and initiate maintenance on charter’s equipment when such responsibilities are stated in the charter party. The chief engineer is responsible to, on own initiative, review the charter party contract with regards to above.
Planned maintenance
* The chief engineer is responsible for that the vessel has the necessary spare parts onboard in due time for all planned maintenance.
Spare parts stock
* The chief engineer is responsible to review the spare parts stock and make recommendations for changes according to relevant charter party, routes and trade areas at least once a year.
Spare part system
* The chief engineer shall verify that the ships computerised spare part system is correct, used and updated continuously. Spare parts received onboard shall be marked as received in the system regardless if the parts are stored or used at once.
Local purchase
* Purchase orders for local purchasing of spare part or requisite, a copy shall be forwarded to the superintendent.
Requisitions
* Requisitions to be sent on E-mail to the superintendent.
