Qualifications And Experience: preferably have an unlimited Master Mariner license and experience as Chief Officer minimum 2 years. The candidate shall have minimum 12 months experience on respective vessel types.

The Chief Officer is the personal deputy for the master. Should the master of any reason be unfit to continue his duties the Chief Officer is to take over responsibility for the vessel.
The Chief Officer is the head of the deck department and is as such responsible to supervise and encourage all subordinates.

* Chief Officer is responsible for updating the Operation Manuals; SMPEP, Cargo Securing, Water Ballast Management and other manuals that requires regular updating of data.

* General Deck Maintenance
In close co-operation with the Chief Engineer plan and initiate mechanical maintenance on deck components such as MOB- boat, winches, davits and cranes.
The Chief Officer is responsible for the deck- and chemical /paint stores and the ordering of accessories to the same. He may delegate the responsibility to the boson. The Chief Officer as head of department and the master shall in any circumstances sign orders from the ship.
HSEQ
* HSEQ system: Comply fully the requirements in the Company’s HSEQ system, national as well as internationals rules and legislation’s and other precautions currently valid on board.
* Drills: Ensure drill matrix is in compliance with Company requirements.
* HSEQ Activities: Actively take part in HSEQ meetings and programs, Non-conformities reporting etc.
HSEQ plan: Ensure HSEQ Plan is implemented in the deck department on board.
Personal
* Certificates: Ensure STCW required certificates, HSE certificates, annual medical, required vaccination and other applicable and Company required certificates are valid at all time.
* HSEQ & Maritime Courses and seminars: Attend as required by the Company.
Emergency procedure
Duty according to mustering list and emergency plan.
Safety Officer – Additional duties
* Recording all safety and pollution exercises in accordance with statutory regulations and Company procedures.
* Identify any communication or language problems among crewmembers and advice the Master accordingly.
* Investigating audit-identified non-conformities/conformances and applying corrective actions as agreed with the head of departments/superintendents.
* Ensuring sufficient resources are available to maintain safety and pollution equipment in a complete state of readiness.
Deck operations
* Liaison with shore authorities and ensuring awareness of SMS
* Ensuring deck crew follow safe working practices as defined in Company’s procedures
* Identifying potential ship hazards associated with deck operations and advising the Master accordingly
* Instructing cadets, officers and crew on relevant procedures.
* Stability and related evaluations for loading and ballasting.
* Notifying the Master immediately of any defects which may affect ship safety or put at risk the marine environment
* Assigning deck officers or crew specific roles with respect to the deck department responsibilities as defined in the Safety Management System.
* Investigating non-conformities/conformances and applying corrective and preventive actions as agreed with the Master.
Radio Communication
* The Chief Officer is the ships radio officer and is responsible for the daily operation of the radio station.
* The Chief Officer shall verify that the radio logbook is kept according to laws and regulations and the normal practice on ships operated by the Company.
Hospital
* The Chief Officer is responsible for the hospital and keep it updated with medicine and other necessary equipment.
