Brief Position Summary:
- Lead and supervise all aspects of the Mechanical Department in the Source Vessel including control of all towed source equipment, source handling, flotation and control equipment and other seismic equipment
- Ensure agreed specifications are met or exceeded. Ensure that equipment adheres to required certification as necessary, and that all necessary documentation is maintained.
- Actively support and promote the business objectives, core values and HSEQ policies.
*NOTE: For the purposes of certain projects, the Chief Gun Mechanic may be reporting to Party Chief/ Seismic Manager on shore. In the event that this does not happen, he will be the most senior seismic leader on board the source vessel. In either of these instances, the roles and responsibilities pertaining to this job description remain as stated.
Main Tasks
* With the Party Chief and the other department Chiefs, plan for safe and timely execution of surveys. Ensure that source array is maintained, deployed and operated in accordance with correct practices, and within agreed specifications.
* Ensure that all cranes, winches, overhead gantries, and other lifting devices and systems used for the handling of seismic source equipment are certified and operated in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and industry standards, and the planned maintenance system.
* Ensure consistent logs are maintained at all times.
* Ensure that the Mechanical department complies with the IMS manual and that audits are conducted as verification.
* Assist the Captain and onboard HSE representatives in ensuring all crewmembers are aware of, understand, and follow the Company QHSE policies.
* Be responsible for appraising and developing subordinates within the guidelines set on the crew. Supervise sub-contractors and ensure they operate in accordance with HSEQ policies and guidelines.
* Act as the Mechanical department focal point in providing pertinent information and feedback to Clients, Party Chief, and office based support personnel. Ensure reports, including the relevant contributions to Final Job Report, are updated accurately and in a timely manner.
* Ensure a complete inventory is maintained and that sufficient spares are available, and assist other departments as required to ensure efficient crew operations.
* Actively encourage teamwork within the crew. Develop and encourage improvements in efficiency.
Internal relations:
* Party Chief, Assistant Party Chief, other departments on board, technical group in office.
External relations:
* On-board Client representatives, Contract personnel, Maritime crew.
Supervision of personnel:
* Supervision of other crew-members, both within the department, and external contractors.

Technical qualifications:
* Strong understanding of all the systems within the mechanical department.
* Detailed knowledge of hydraulic systems, High Pressure air systems, and source equipment.
* Understanding of lifting and towing operations and certifications. Ability to produce clear and accurate written reports.
* A strong awareness and commitment to HSEQ.
* Ability to organize, supervise and motivate co-workers. Good command of English, both written and oral.
Experience:
* Minimum 5 years’ experience with marine seismic 3-D operations, preferably with 3 years source equipment. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is desirable.
Personal qualifications
Innovative and able to learn new skills, also able to work unsupervised and under pressure, and a willingness to be part of a team environment.
Physical requirements:
* Good physical fitness and health. The position requires long hours of physical work in a harsh environment aboard the vessel. Ability to carry out work equivalent to lifting and carrying 20 kg weight is a requirement.
Requirement to travel:
* Frequent, worldwide, and sometimes on short notice.
Other Requirements:
* Valid passport, applicable visas, and medically fit for work offshore, both physically and psychologically. A good command of English language, both written and oral, is compulsory.
